It is called a Tz'ite' reading, a sacred tradition passed down through generations of Maya spiritual leaders to bridge the physical and spiritual worlds. What are Tz'ite’ Beans? The star of this ceremony is the Tz'ite' bean (pronounced tz-ee-teh). These are the bright red-and-orange seeds of the native Erythrina tree. The Maya consider them sacred. In their famous creation story, the Popol Vuh, the very first humans were carved out of Tz'ite' wood. The Role of the Daykeeper: This reading is performed by an Ajq'ij, a traditional Maya "Daykeeper." They spend years studying the Cholq'ij, a sacred 260-day calendar that tracks cosmic and telluric energies. The Daykeeper acts as a translator between the client and the spirit world. How a Reading Happens: A traditional Tz'ite' reading follows these steps: Sacred Space: I open sacred space and communicate with the energies. The Prayer: A bundle of seeds—often mixed with crystals—is poured onto a woven cloth. I mix them while the client focuses on a question. The Scoop: I scoop up a random handful of seeds. Counting by Fours: The scooped seeds are sorted into small piles of four. The Remainder: The final leftover seeds correspond to specific day signs on the Maya calendar. I read these final numbers to provide guidance. A Living Tradition: Tz'ite' readings help people find balance and clarity in their questions about anything in life.
